The jar of blue-green powder at the back of your cupboard was almost certainly bought for one smoothie, turned the whole glass the color of pond water, and never came out again.
That powder is spirulina, a blue-green algae, and the color you disliked is the reason to keep it. As much as a fifth of its dry weight is a pigment-protein called phycocyanin, and phycocyanin is what the allergy research is built on.
In rats, spirulina and isolated phycocyanin blunt the release of histamine from mast cells, the immune cells that fire during an allergic reaction and drive the sneezing, the streaming nose, and the itch. That is animal and cell work. It is a mechanism, not proof in people.
The human evidence is narrower and stronger than most supplement claims. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, one hundred fifty people with allergic rhinitis took two grams of spirulina a day for close to six months (European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, 2008).
Nasal discharge, sneezing, congestion, and itching all fell further on spirulina than on placebo, and the gap was clear rather than marginal. An earlier study found the same two grams a day cut interleukin-4, a signal that steers the immune system toward the allergic response, by about a third.
Here the hormone story runs backward from the usual one. Through most of these issues the trouble is estrogen leaving. With histamine, part of the trouble is estrogen staying loud on the way out.
Estradiol activates mast cells directly and prompts them to release more histamine, shown so far in cell and animal work. Progesterone does the reverse and supports the enzyme that clears histamine, and progesterone is the hormone that drops first in perimenopause.
So in the years of erratic cycles, estrogen can spike with too little progesterone behind it, and many women meet hay fever, hives, or a new itch for the first time in decades. That link between the hormone swings and the mast cells is mostly mechanism and observation, not a trial in perimenopausal women.
What spirulina does, it does from outside that fight. Phycocyanin acts on the mast cell itself, so it works whether your estrogen ran high this week or low, which is why the trials moved ordinary hay fever without touching anyone's hormones.

Set against all that, the evidence here is narrow and worth stating straight. Spirulina has one placebo-controlled trial in ordinary allergic rhinitis, a mast-cell mechanism still drawn mostly from animals, and nothing yet aimed at hormone-driven histamine.
The Pantry Prescription
WHAT TO BUY:
Plain spirulina, listed as Arthrospira on the label, as powder or tablets from a brand that third-party tests for microcystins and heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and lead. Contamination is the real risk with any algae, so look for a certificate of analysis or a reputable producer, and skip generic blue-green algae scooped from open lakes.
HOW MUCH:
About two grams a day, which is roughly a rounded teaspoon of powder or the tablet count that adds up to two grams on the label. That is the dose the trials used, and more has not been shown to do more.
HOW OFTEN:
Daily, and give it time. The main trial ran close to six months, so this is a slow, steady habit, best started before and carried through your allergy season rather than reached for during one bad afternoon.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Modest help, not a cure. In the placebo-controlled trial it eased nasal discharge, sneezing, congestion, and itching more than placebo, but it is not a fast antihistamine and it did not erase symptoms. It has not been tested in perimenopausal women or on hormone-driven histamine, so treat it as a low-cost addition alongside whatever antihistamine already works for you, not a replacement.
WHAT IT COSTS:
Roughly 8 to 14 dollars a pound, so about 50 to 90 cents an ounce, with in-shell usually cheaper by the bag but lighter once shelled. A two-ounce-a-day habit lands somewhere near 35 to 55 dollars a month, less if you buy in bulk.
WHO SHOULD ASK FIRST:
Skip it in pregnancy and breastfeeding, where safety data are thin and contamination matters most. Avoid it with phenylketonuria, since spirulina is high in phenylalanine. If you have an autoimmune condition or take immune-suppressing medication, ask your clinician, because spirulina can nudge the immune system the other way. It shows a mild blood-thinning effect in the lab, so mention it if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs or have surgery coming.

Blue-Green Sesame Sprinkle
In a small jar, stir together two tablespoons of toasted sesame seeds and one rounded teaspoon of spirulina powder.
Add a pinch of flaky salt and the grated zest of half a lemon, then stir or shake until the color is even.
Keep it off the heat and scatter it over avocado toast, warm rice, or a soft-boiled egg just before eating, since heat dulls the blue pigment; the rounded teaspoon of spirulina here carries close to the two grams used in the trials.
