Rolling onto one side in bed sets the room turning for twenty seconds, and it stops as soon as your head is still.
This is the most common cause of vertigo in the world, and it is a mechanical problem rather than a circulatory one. Inside the utricle of each inner ear sit crystals about ten micrometers across, made of calcium carbonate in its calcite form, more than nine tenths mineral by weight.
They are meant to stay bedded in a gel layer, where their weight tells the brain which way is down. When some of them come loose and drift into a semicircular canal, that canal begins reporting motion that is not happening.
Nothing has been lost from the body when this occurs. Something has changed address.
Human otoconia do not regenerate across a lifetime. They hold their shape only while the fluid around them stays saturated with the ions they are built from, which ties their stability to how the whole body is handling calcium.
Positional vertigo runs roughly two women to every man and peaks between the fifth and seventh decades of life. In ovariectomized mice the otoconial layer grew abnormally bulky and the crystals loose, and estradiol or raloxifene brought it back toward normal. That is animal research, and the same sequence has not been demonstrated in women.
What has been tested in people is vitamin D. A multicenter randomized trial in Neurology in twenty twenty followed just over a thousand patients who had already had an attack.
Those whose blood level fell below the deficiency threshold took four hundred international units of vitamin D and five hundred milligrams of calcium carbonate twice daily for a year. The share who had another attack fell from roughly forty-seven percent to thirty-eight percent.
Which brings this to a mushroom. Ergosterol sits in fungal cell membranes the way cholesterol sits in yours, and ultraviolet light converts it into vitamin D2.

Untreated white button mushrooms carry almost nothing, a median under seven international units in a seventy gram serving. Sliced and left in direct midday sun for fifteen minutes across sixteen experiments, the same serving reached one hundred fifty-seven to seven hundred fifty-four international units.
In a five week randomized placebo-controlled trial in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, soup made from ultraviolet-irradiated button mushrooms raised blood vitamin D in deficient adults about as well as a vitamin D2 supplement did.
Two limits are worth saying out loud. D2 is the weaker form, and head to head, D3 raises and holds total blood levels better.
And the vertigo trial used D3 with calcium in people already diagnosed, so what stands is that correcting a shortfall lowers recurrence. No one has tested mushrooms on vertigo at all.
The Pantry Prescription
WHAT TO BUY:
A package labeled vitamin D mushrooms or UV-exposed, sold as sliced whites, sliced baby bellas, or whole portabella caps. If the store does not carry them, buy plain sliced white button mushrooms and make your own.
HOW MUCH:
One 70 g serving, about a cup of slices. UV-treated packs are labeled at 400 IU (10 mcg) of vitamin D2 per serving, half the daily value. To do it yourself, spread slices in a single layer, gills up, in direct sun between mid-morning and mid-afternoon for 15 minutes.
HOW OFTEN:
Most days. Sun-exposed mushrooms held their vitamin D2 through overnight refrigeration, and cooking costs under 10 percent.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Nothing you will feel. Treat this as a food-level contribution to vitamin D intake, not as vertigo treatment. If you have had positional vertigo, the useful step is asking for a 25(OH)D blood test, because the trial's benefit appeared only in people below the deficiency cutoff, and it used D3 plus calcium rather than food.
WHAT IT COSTS:

WHO SHOULD ASK FIRST:
Dizziness that is constant rather than positional, or that comes with hearing loss, headache, weakness, double vision, or trouble walking, needs a clinician now and not a mushroom. Anyone with sarcoidosis or another granulomatous disease, primary hyperparathyroidism, chronic kidney disease, or a history of calcium kidney stones should not add vitamin D or calcium without medical advice, and the same goes for anyone taking thiazide diuretics or digoxin. Torn Mushrooms with Lemon and Parsley
Tear an 8 oz package of vitamin D mushrooms into rough pieces with your hands and put them into a dry hot skillet over medium-high heat for 3 minutes without stirring, until the water they release hisses off.
Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1 thinly sliced garlic clove, and toss for 2 minutes until the torn edges brown.
Off the heat, toss the hot mushrooms with the juice of half a lemon, a handful of torn parsley, salt and pepper. Half a package is more than one label serving, so a plate of this made with UV-treated mushrooms carries several hundred international units of vitamin D2, while the same plate made with ordinary mushrooms carries almost none.
