A globe artichoke is a flower bud, picked before it opens. The part studied for your digestion is not the tender heart you eat but the tough leaf most cooks strip off and throw away.
Those leaves are dense with caffeoylquinic acids, a family of plant phenolics that includes cynarin. Cynarin is the compound that pushed artichoke into the pharmacology literature in the first place.
The best-characterized thing these compounds do is prompt the liver to make and release more bile. In a small placebo-controlled study, artichoke extract delivered by tube into the duodenum raised bile flow well above placebo, though a tube is not a capsule and not a dinner. More bile means fat from a meal gets emulsified faster, which is part of why the upper gut can feel less heavy afterward.
The symptom evidence comes from functional dyspepsia, the medical name for chronic post-meal fullness, early satiety, and upper-abdominal discomfort with no ulcer or disease behind it. In a six-week double-blind trial of 247 adults, published in Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics in 2003, artichoke leaf extract eased those symptoms more than placebo and improved dyspepsia-related quality of life.
The gap between the plant and the pill matters here. That trial dose was close to two grams of concentrated leaf extract a day, swallowed in capsules. The heart you roast or spoon from a jar is a different part of the plant at a small fraction of that concentration, so dinner is not a stand-in for the studied dose.
This matters now because upper-gut complaints climb around menopause. One 2026 review reported that women in the menopausal transition are close to three times more likely to report abnormal gastrointestinal symptoms, functional dyspepsia and reflux among them.
Estrogen is clearly part of this. It acts on receptors along the gut wall and helps set the pace of gastric emptying, the speed at which the stomach clears a meal.
Here the story refuses to simplify. Some research shows estrogen slowing gastric emptying, other research shows it speeding emptying back up, so its decline at menopause does not point in one clean direction.

What holds up is narrow. The bile effect in people is real, the dyspepsia relief in people is real, but the two artichoke trials enrolled adults with dyspepsia and never tracked hormone status. Whether any of it applies specifically to a woman at menopause is plausible and untested.

A standardized artichoke leaf extract in capsules, not the canned or marinated hearts, with the label naming its caffeoylquinic acid or cynarin content. The 320 mg leaf-extract capsule is the form used in the dyspepsia trial.
HOW MUCH:
The trial used 320 mg taken as two capsules three times a day, about 1,920 mg total. Common products are labeled 320 to 640 mg, two or three times daily. Take it with meals.
HOW OFTEN:
Daily, with food, for at least four to six weeks before you judge it. The controlled trial ran six weeks, and open studies saw fullness ease within one to two weeks.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
For some people, a modest easing of post-meal fullness, bloating, and upper-abdominal discomfort. It is a symptom aid, not a cure, and it does not treat reflux disease, ulcers, or gallbladder problems.

Warm Lemon Artichoke Grain Bowl
Heat a pouch of pre-cooked quinoa or brown rice for about ninety seconds and tip it into a bowl as the base.
Warm a drained jar of artichoke hearts in a spoon of olive oil over medium heat for three to four minutes, until the edges catch.
Spoon the artichokes over the grain, squeeze over half a lemon, and scatter torn parsley with a pinch of salt.
Note that these marinated hearts are the edible bud, not the bitter leaf the trials used, so treat this as an easy way to eat artichoke often rather than as the 1,920 mg leaf-extract dose.
